Emergency locksmith triage

Lock fault triage board

Identify the symptom, stop the damage, then choose access, repair, replacement or insurance follow-up.

Non-destructive access

Pro: Best when the lock is intact, the issue is key position, latch, alignment or a recoverable cylinder fault.

Limit: Not guaranteed where parts are broken internally, attacked, seized, double-locked, or already damaged by forcing.

Controlled destructive entry

Pro: Useful when safety, access or securing matters more than preserving a failed lock.

Limit: Expect follow-up replacement and evidence photos if burglary damage, insurance or landlord reporting is involved.

Temporary securing

Pro: Right when a specialist part is unavailable but the door must be safe tonight.

Limit: It is a holding measure, not a finished security upgrade or compliance sign-off.

Repair or replace?

Use cause, risk and evidence

A lock that opens once is not automatically repaired. Decide what failed and what proof is needed after the opening is safe.

Repair is credible when

  • Alignment or handle pressure caused the fault.
  • The cylinder is intact and correctly sized.
  • Extraction leaves the keyway undamaged.
  • The existing lock still meets the required standard.

Replacement is stronger when

  • There are attack marks, snapping or missing parts.
  • Keys are lost, stolen or uncontrolled.
  • The lock fails BS3621 or cylinder security checks.
  • Wear is repeated, internal or hard to isolate.

FAQs

Emergency locksmith problem FAQs

What should I do first if a key is stuck?

Stop forcing it. Return the key gently to the position where it normally inserts or withdraws. If the door is open, keep it open.

Should I use pliers on a broken key?

Only if the fragment is clearly proud and moves with light pressure. Do not dig into the keyway or push the broken blade deeper.

Is a snapped cylinder safe if it still locks?

No. Snapped, cracked, loose, spinning or visibly attacked cylinders should be treated as compromised until replaced and checked.

When is replacement better than repair?

Replace after attack damage, unsafe projection, failed standards, lost-key risk or repeated internal wear. Repair is often better for alignment and pressure faults.

Does every emergency repair need BS3621?

No. BS3621 is mainly an insurance-facing standard for many timber-door locks. Cylinders, multipoint gearboxes and escape routes need separate judgement.
