How to Measure uPVC Door Handles

Replacement uPVC and multipoint door handles need more than a rough visual match. Measure the PZ centres, fixing screw centres, backplate length, backplate width, and lever position before choosing a replacement.

Use centre-to-centre measurements for the spindle, cylinder, and fixing screws.

The measurements to take

PZ centres

Handle spindle to cylinder centre

Measure from the centre of the square spindle hole to the centre of the euro cylinder cut-out. Many uPVC handles are 92mm PZ, but always check yours.

Screw centres

Top screw to bottom screw

Measure between the fixing screw centres. Replacement handles need these holes to line up with the existing door prep.

Backplate size

Overall length and width

Measure the full backplate length and width so the new handle covers the old footprint on the door.

Lever offset

Top screw to spindle

Check where the lever sits on the backplate. Handles can look similar but place the lever at different heights.

Before ordering a replacement handle

Measure the existing handle while it is still fitted, then confirm once removed if the dimensions are unclear.
Measure to the centre of holes and cut-outs, not to the edge of the metal.
Check both sides of the door if the inside and outside backplates are different.
Keep the old screws and spindle until the replacement handle has been fitted and tested.

Not the handle?

You may need to measure the euro cylinder instead

If you are replacing the lock barrel rather than the handle set, use the euro cylinder measuring guide.
